As part of the GameTalk series, VNGGames Starters had a great time discussing data with Mr. Tran Dao Khue, Head of Game Data Studio, at GameTalk #3 “Working with Data: A Big Picture.” In an open exchange space, Mr. Khue shared information on the roles and tasks of data along with updates in the data working process with Starters during the two-hour discussion. 

 

 

Providing a quantitative view of all business aspects

Due to its importance and inseparability in the workflow, data is considered the lifeblood of VNGGames operations. When it comes to the two divisions of VNGGames, Publishing and Development, there are some similarities and differences in the nature and functionality of each set of data. In order to use data effectively and maximize its value and utility, it is important to unify and standardize data. To achieve this, VNGGames developed Game Data Studio, which manages all data and creates tools to support management, publishing, and business decisions.

 

At VNGGames, data is used for operational and marketing purposes. In addition to the market, key verification and monitoring indicators include operational data (in-game data, payment data, financial data), marketing data (indicators in activities), and user data (data related to people playing game products), as well as data collected by third-party tools and platforms.

 

Finding meaning in every data

When working with data, one must acknowledge that it involves working with numbers. Therefore, it is crucial to adopt an approach that uncovers the significance and narrative behind those numbers. Khue further highlighted the importance of generating and combining valuable insights from available data. Hence, it is imperative for beginners to acquire ample knowledge and skills in evaluating, categorizing, and scrutinizing data, all while consistently nurturing their expertise in the field. Given the ever-evolving market conditions, particularly the regulations and user-related trends concerning the collection of user data, it is our responsibility to consistently update our knowledge in order to maintain a comprehensive understanding of the game and data industry.
