Job description

The Role: Robotics Engineer – Intern

A Robotics Engineer Intern at PT Lab will own the physical-to-software interface during our deployment of physiotherapy robotics platform and 4-month Embodied AI data collection sprint. You will work on custom hardware rigs used to capture high-fidelity physical interaction data, ensure reliable sensor-to-disk data flows, and work closely with our software engineers to keep the data pipeline running cleanly from hardware input to storage. This is a role for someone who is equally comfortable with a soldering iron and a terminal window.

You Will:

  • Set up, operate, and maintain the hardware rigs used during the data collection sprint, including sensors, actuators, and supporting electronics.
  • Ensure sensor-to-disk reliability: monitor data capture pipelines, identify hardware faults, and resolve signal integrity or calibration issues in real time.
  • Interface with the software engineering team to synchronize hardware outputs with data pipeline requirements (timing, format, sampling rates).
  • Perform regular calibration, inspection, and maintenance of all data collection equipment throughout the sprint.
  • Document hardware configurations, failure modes, and operational procedures for future reproducibility.
  • Support the integration of new sensors or hardware components as the data collection scope evolves.

Requirement

Basic Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing education in Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience building, operating, or maintaining robotic or electromechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems and microcontrollers (e.g., STM32, Arduino, Raspberry Pi).
  • Basic proficiency in at least one programming language used in robotics contexts (C/C++ or Python).
  • Strong attention to detail and a systematic approach to hardware debugging and fault isolation.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced physical lab environment and communicate clearly in English.
Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with ROS/ROS2 for sensor integration, topic monitoring, or basic robot control.
  • Familiarity with sensor types relevant to physical interaction data (IMUs, force/torque sensors, cameras, encoders).
  • Experience with data logging tools and time-synchronization across multiple hardware streams.
  • Background in signal conditioning, PCB debugging, or wiring harness assembly.
  • Prior lab or industry experience involving physical hardware deployment (robotics competitions, research labs, or technical internships).
