Game Development with Unity: Empower one another, go further together

03:24 AM | 26/05/2023

In May 2023, as part of VNG University Week, students from the FPT Academy International (FAI) spent a meaningful Friday morning at VNG Campus, hosted by VNGGames. The event occurred during the open week for tech students from April 27 to May 12, 2023.

Mr. Bui Trong Hung, Principal Software Engineer from MadPoly Studio (MPS), proudly shared his experience and knowledge about developing a game using Unity, a well-known game engine, also the primary focus for these FAI game-developing students. To give a concise overview, Hung started by describing the general process and its components, the roles of each position in a developing team, key responsibilities for different teams, and crucial skills for engaging in Unity game development.

Understanding the process: How much is enough?

The process of developing a Unity game stretches, not ending the moment the product is created but longing throughout the following stages, including publishing, operating, marketing, data processing, and initiating more ideas for new games. It is a continuous process where the starting point is the end product, and the cycle repeats itself. Hung shared all the details with FAI students, capturing the main points and stressing key takeaways.

“Who sees through all will guarantee more success”

To assure the delivered quality of a game product, the developer plays an important part. They are the one who should wholeheartedly understand their product, users, and the market in which the game is engaging. This involvement applies throughout the game development process, from initial stages such as researching, writing the storyline, and coding, to further progress of communicating and marketing the product to different user groups effectively, updating and upgrading the product, and reworking the product or even breathing a new life into it, etc.

Besides showing your full responsibility for your product, from Hung’s perspective as he answered the students’ queries, working as a team is another skill that each game developer should be able to perform, and the same thing for other soft skills. A person can develop a simple game should they acquire the basics of game development, but a developer who wants to level up their career needs more than just theories: they must practice and apply different skill sets to better enhance their work quality. It would be useful for students to learn these skills during their time at the university, then work them up through actual work and projects professionally.
